Description
Large Santa Clara Jar with handles by Margaret Tafoya. This beautiful jar represents the diversity in Ms. Tafoya's work. Margaret Tafoya enjoyed experimenting with different styles and made many "utilitarian" pieces such as candlestick holders & wall sconces. With this piece she fashioned an immense jar of relatively thin wall and added handles in the style of a Greek urn. She has carved a very elaborate design into the clay at the upper half of the vase that depicts two sacred Avanyu (Water Serpents). This piece was published in Margaret Tafoya: A Tewa Potter's Heritage and Legacy (1986: 103, fig. 3-41). Blair, Mary Ellen and Laurence.
