Jemez Pottery

The pottery of the Jemez Pueblo was long considered to be thick and unlovely, but in the 1970s and 1980s that reputation began to change. Families like the Bacas, Fraguas, Gachupins, Luceros, Tafoyas and others began to develop Jemez pottery, creating their own signature styles, and transforming Jemez pottery into the artistically beautiful and technically excellent art form it is today. Jemez artists are also known for their lovely and often whimsical storytellers, the depiction in clay of those members of their people that are gifted with and honored by their ability to pass along tribal customs and history in the form of stories.
