Description
Maria Martinez is arguably the most famous Indigenous potter in the United States. In 1918 she and her husband Julian perfected the black-on-black style with a "gunmetal" finish and shared the process within the San Ildefonso Pueblo and beyond. This plain, unpainted jar exemplifies that process. Signed "Marie" in the clay on the bottom.
Condition: Very good condition. Some small nicks and abrasions commensurate with age. No sign of restoration.
Circa: 1920-1925
